UJ@20: A Journey of Growth, Community and Hope
UJ@20: A Journey of Growth, Community and Hope
As the University of Johannesburg (UJ) celebrates its 20th anniversary, I’ve taken time to reflect on what this milestone means to me personally, especially as a third-year student. UJ@20 isn’t just a marker of time, it represents growth, transformation, and the profound impact the university continues to have on students like me. It’s a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come and the experiences that have shaped us along the way.
“The University of Johannesburg’s vibrant campus- where my journey began”.A Place Where It All Began
When I first arrived at UJ, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Transitioning from high school to university was challenging. The campus felt enormous, lectures were much larger than what I was used to, and the academic demands were more intense. I often found myself feeling lost, both physically and emotionally, as I tried to navigate this new environment. But with time, things began to change. UJ’s welcoming and supportive atmosphere helped ease the transition. Lecturers were approachable and genuinely interested in our success, the libraries became my go-to study havens, and joining study groups helped me stay focused and encouraged.
One of the most defining moments of my academic journey was working on a Public Relations campaign for a local business. What initially felt like a daunting task quickly became one of my proudest achievements. Working in a team, developing strategies, and seeing our ideas come to life taught me invaluable lessons in communication, creativity, and collaboration. That experience gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities and pushed me out of my comfort zone. UJ has not only equipped me with academic knowledge but also with essential life skills such as adaptability, perseverance, and problem-solving.
Contribution to Community and Social Development
UJ is committed to more than just education—it also fosters social responsibility and community involvement. During my time here, I had the privilege of participating in a campus outreach initiative that supported young learners in improving their reading skills. Spending time with these learners and witnessing their growth reminded me of the importance of compassion and the power of giving back. It was humbling and inspiring, and it reinforced the idea that education can uplift entire communities when we work together.
The Vibrant Campus Life
One of the things that makes UJ truly special is its vibrant campus life. The university brings together students from diverse backgrounds, creating a space rich in culture, ideas, and experiences. I’ve enjoyed attending cultural festivals that celebrate South Africa’s heritage, cheering alongside peers at sports events, and participating in seminars and workshops that have broadened my understanding of the world. These moments have not only made my time at UJ enjoyable but have also helped me build lasting friendships and a deep sense of belonging. UJ is more than a place of learning, it’s a community that nurtures personal and social development.

Looking Ahead with Hope
As UJ steps into the next 20 years, I’m optimistic about its future. I hope the university continues to innovate, embrace digital learning, and expand its impact within local communities. It’s exciting to imagine how future students will benefit from new technologies and programs designed to empower them. For me, UJ has been a launchpad—a place where dreams take root and futures are shaped.
What’s one lesson from your university experience that you think everyone should learn and what’s one piece of advice you’d give to your first-year self?

One lesson..Embrace change as it comes, every stumble can lead you to taking the steps you need to become a better you. Advice i'd give my first year self is...Surround yourself around the right circle of people and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
ReplyDeleteThat's a powerful advice. Embracing change and building a supportive circle truly shapes growth. Your first-year self would be proud of your wisdom today.
DeleteI learnt that time management and prioritization of schoolwork makes a significant difference.
ReplyDeleteI would advice my first-year self that building relationships with peers and mentors is really important and lastly, don't be afraid to ask for help.
I totally agree with you. Time management and prioritising schoolwork are game-changers. Building strong relationships with peers and mentors creates a valuable support network. And also asking for help shows strength, not weakness.
DeleteI think sports day is a great way of relieving school work pressure
ReplyDeleteThis is such a heartfelt reflection. UJ’s impact clearly goes beyond academics, it’s about growth, connection, and purpose. One lesson I’d share is that embrace discomfort, it’s where real growth happens. Advice to my first-year self: ask questions, stay curious, and trust your journey.
ReplyDeleteWonderfully expressed.True growth begins outside your comfort zone. Staying inquisitive and believing in your path leads to real transformation. Thank you so much
DeleteGreat blog, it makes one realise that our journeys are so interconnected. Great question there at the end, to answer it, I think students should declutter the thoughts of wanting to always work alone, it's often said that teamwork makes the dreamwork so working in groups is super helpful. What about you? Do you think potential UJ students can also gain from this before they arrive to UJ?
ReplyDeleteI agree. Your point about teamwork is spot on. Collaboration is key for new UJ students. By embracing group work and diverse perspectives early on, they can enhance their learning experience and build valuable connections. Starting with an open mind and willingness to connect will definitely set them up for success at UJ.
DeleteOne advice I would have for everyone is make sure you surround yourself with people that have the same goal as you and one piece of advice that I have for first year students is start networking as soon as possible.
ReplyDeleteI really admire how UJ encourages students to make a difference beyond the classroom. Being part of a university that values community and social impact makes the whole experience so much more meaningful.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, Uj is making a huge difference for so many students.
DeleteThis is an inspiring piece of writing. I can relate so much. One lesson I think everyone should learn from my experience is that redirection can take place, challenges will be there, but your attitude will determine how you overcome. I would advice my first year self to let down my guard and enjoy the chaos and be more present, because time flies
